What happens after sending the Attendance Allowance form
Once you have returned your Attendance Allowance claim form, there are several steps before a decision is made. This page explains what to expect.
We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.
Step 1: The DWP reviews your form
The DWP will review the information you provided on your claim form. They may contact your GP or other health professionals to seek supporting information, or they may contact you for more details.
Step 2: A decision is made
Unlike PIP, Attendance Allowance does not usually involve a face-to-face assessment with a health professional. Most claims are decided based on the written information provided. The DWP decision maker considers whether your care needs meet the criteria for the lower or higher rate.
Step 3: You receive a decision letter
You will receive a letter from the DWP explaining whether your claim has been successful, which rate you have been awarded, and the period of the award. The letter will also explain your right to challenge the decision if you disagree.
How long does it take?
Processing times can vary. The DWP publishes average processing times on GOV.UK. You can contact the Attendance Allowance helpline to check the progress of your claim.
While you wait
You do not need to wait for the outcome of your Attendance Allowance claim before applying for other benefits. Attendance Allowance can increase entitlement to means-tested benefits such as Pension Credit — if you think you may be entitled to these, check GOV.UK or contact the relevant service.
