Blue Badge and Motability

Some people who get PIP or DLA for children may also be able to get a Blue Badge or use the Motability scheme.

We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.

What this section covers

Getting a disability benefit can sometimes open the door to other practical help — most commonly a Blue Badge for parking and the Motability Scheme for leasing a vehicle. These are separate schemes with their own rules, but they often link to PIP or DLA.

Blue Badge

A Blue Badge helps people with a disability or health condition park closer to where they need to go. Some people qualify automatically because of the benefit they get (for example a higher-rate mobility award), while others are assessed by their local council. It is not tied to one single benefit. See PIP, DLA and Blue Badge explained.

The Motability Scheme

The Motability Scheme lets people exchange certain mobility awards to lease a car, scooter or powered wheelchair. You usually need the higher-rate mobility part of DLA, the enhanced mobility part of PIP, or a similar award. See PIP, DLA and the Motability scheme.

Important

Blue Badge and Motability are run separately from the DWP benefits this website explains. Eligibility and how to apply differ, so always check the official rules. For Blue Badge, your local council decides; for Motability, the scheme has its own process.

What is linked help?

Some disability benefits are linked to other support. Getting PIP or DLA for children at a certain rate may mean you can apply for other things automatically or more easily.

This section covers two of those links: Blue Badge parking and the Motability scheme.
