Looking after yourself as a carer

Carer’s assessments and where to find support for you.

We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.

You can have your own needs assessed

If you provide regular care, you have a right to a carer’s assessment from your local council. This looks at the support you need — not just the person you care for — and can lead to practical help, breaks, or other support.

How to get a carer’s assessment

You ask your local council’s adult social care team for a carer’s assessment. It is free, and you can have one whether or not the person you care for has had their own assessment. Find your council on GOV.UK.

Your wellbeing matters

Caring can be rewarding but also tiring and isolating. It is important to look after your own health, take breaks where you can, and ask for help. If you are struggling to cope, see our If you need help now page.

Other support

Local carer organisations and charities offer information, support groups and a break from caring. Your local council and GP can point you to services in your area.
