PIP reviews and changes

PIP awards are not always permanent. The DWP may review your PIP at the end of an award period or if your circumstances change.

We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.

Planned reviews

Most PIP awards are made for a fixed period. As the end of your award approaches, the DWP may send you a review form asking for updated information about how your condition affects you.

A review is reassessed in the same way as an original claim — including a possible assessment. The outcome may be that your award stays the same, increases, decreases or stops.

Reporting a change in circumstances

You must tell the DWP if your circumstances change in a way that could affect your PIP. This includes if your condition gets significantly worse or better, if you go into hospital or care for more than 28 days, or if you go abroad for an extended period.

Check GOV.UK for the current list of changes you need to report and how to report them.

Failing to report a change in circumstances that affects your PIP could result in an overpayment, which the DWP may ask you to repay.

DWP-initiated reviews

The DWP can also review your PIP at any time — not just at the planned review date. If the DWP initiates a review, they will contact you to explain the process.

If your award is reduced or stopped at review

If a review results in your award being reduced or stopped, you can request a mandatory reconsideration and, if still unhappy, appeal. The same process applies as for an initial decision.
