What happens after starting a PIP claim
Once you have contacted the DWP to start a PIP claim, there are several steps before a decision is made. This page explains what to expect.
We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.
Step 1: The initial call
You start a PIP claim by phoning the DWP. During this call, they will take some basic information and confirm your eligibility to make a claim. The DWP will then post you a claim form.
Step 2: The ‘How your disability affects you’ form
The DWP will send you a form — sometimes called PIP2 or ‘How your disability affects you’. This asks you to describe how your condition affects your ability to carry out the PIP daily living and mobility activities.
You need to return this form by the deadline given. If you need more time, contact the DWP before the deadline.
Step 3: The assessment
Most claimants are asked to attend an assessment with a health professional. This may be face to face, by telephone or by video. Some claims are decided on the written evidence alone without an assessment.
See our PIP assessments page for more detail on what assessments involve.
Step 4: The decision
After the assessment, the DWP decision maker reviews all the evidence and makes a decision. This is sent to you in writing. The letter explains the outcome, the points awarded for each activity, and your rights if you disagree.
How long does it take?
Processing times vary. The DWP publishes current average processing times on GOV.UK. If your claim is taking a long time, you can contact the DWP for an update.
