PIP rates and payments

PIP is paid at different rates depending on how your condition affects you. This page explains the rates and how payments work.

We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.

The two components

PIP has two components: daily living and mobility. You may receive one or both, and each is paid at either standard or enhanced rate. This means there are four possible combinations.

The rate for each component is determined by the total points scored for that component during the assessment process.

Current rates

PIP rates are set by the government and reviewed annually. Check GOV.UK for the current weekly rates for each component and rate, as these change each April.

PIP is paid every four weeks directly into your bank account.

When payments start

PIP is not usually paid immediately when a claim is made. There is a qualifying period — you normally need to have had the relevant difficulties for at least three months before a claim can be made, and the condition must be expected to continue for at least nine months.

Once a decision is made and an award is confirmed, payments begin from the date agreed by the DWP.

Tax and other benefits

PIP is not taxable and does not count as income for most means-tested benefits. Receiving PIP may also make you eligible for other support — for example, a disabled person’s railcard, Blue Badge, or Vehicle Excise Duty exemption. These are separate schemes and eligibility varies.

Award periods and reviews

PIP awards are made for a set period, after which the DWP may review your claim. Some awards are ongoing (sometimes called indefinite or enhanced awards). The DWP can also initiate a review at any time if there is a change in your circumstances.

What decides standard or enhanced

Each component is paid at the standard or enhanced rate depending on the points scored:

  • 8 to 11 points in a component = standard rate
  • 12 or more points = enhanced rate

Daily living and mobility are scored separately, so you can get a different rate for each, or one component and not the other. See the daily living and mobility points tables.
