How to claim DLA for a child

DLA for children is claimed using a paper form. This page explains how to start a claim, what to expect, and how to complete the form effectively.

We explain the system. We do not advise on individual cases.

Starting a claim

A claim for DLA for a child is made using the DLA1 Child claim form, available from GOV.UK or the disability benefits helpline. The date the form is requested can sometimes fix the start of the claim, so it is worth noting.

Filling in the form

The form asks how the child’s condition affects them day and night compared with other children of the same age. It helps to describe the extra help, supervision and time needed, with specific examples, across good and bad days. See how to describe your difficulties.

Evidence

You can include supporting evidence such as letters from doctors, a care plan, or school and SEN evidence. The evidence checklist lists the kinds of evidence that can help.

After you send the form

The DWP considers the claim and writes with a decision. If you disagree, there is a route through mandatory reconsideration and appeal.
